East to Porthleven – Sea Quest
‘Step aboard’ for this 3-hour boat trip East to Porthleven, one of the exciting Sea Quests provided by Heritage Adventures, as part of our range of authentic, high-quality, guided tours, exploring West Cornwall’s rich history on foot or by boat.
This Sea Quest takes in the varied coastline along the northern side of Mount’s Bay – from Newlyn, pass Penzance, over to Marazion and the spectacular St Michael’s Mount, and on towards Porthleven, via Perranuthnoe, Cudden Point, Praa Sands, Rinsey and Trewavas Head.
With your guide, professional archaeologist Jeanette Ratcliffe, learn about this coastline’s fascinating past, stretching back into early prehistory, and discover evidence for sea level rise and thousands of years of human activity.
Off-shore flint deposits, forests submerged beneath the sea and old land surfaces covered by sand dunes; Neolithic axe factories and Iron Age hillforts and cliff castles; a legendary tin-trading centre and post-Roman royal citadel; medieval markets, harbours, chapels and churches; the Benedictine priory and 12th century castle crowning St Michael’s Mount; evidence of later fortification, fishing, trading and smuggling (by the infamous ‘King of Prussia’); the castellated mansion of an 18th century seaweed researcher; and mine engine-houses dramatically perched on the sheer cliff edge.
